Compress PDF
Shrink PDF files for email attachments, application portals or government uploads. Choose a target size and see what was actually achieved before you download.
How it works
Choose a PDF
Select a PDF or drag it onto the drop area. The file stays on your device.
Pick target size and method
For example 2 MB for an upload portal. If needed, several quality levels are tried, from gentle to strong.
Check and save the result
You see the original and resulting size, the savings and whether the target was reached. Your original file stays unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my PDF barely get smaller?
Most of a PDF’s size comes from embedded images or fonts. If a PDF consists mainly of text, it is often already stored compactly, and little can be saved without converting it to images. LocalFile tells you this honestly instead of promising a reduction.
Is the target size guaranteed?
No. The target size is a goal, not a promise. LocalFile tries increasingly stronger settings and then shows you the actual result. If the target is missed, you see it immediately and can choose another method.
What happens to my original file?
Nothing. LocalFile only reads the file and creates a new PDF that you download separately. The original file on your device is not modified.
Which images are compressed?
Color and grayscale images with 8 bits per channel (e.g. photos and scans in RGB or grayscale). CMYK images from print files, black-and-white scans (1 bit) and image masks are left untouched, because converting them could distort colors or transparency.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Processing runs in your browser using the open-source libraries pdf-lib and pdf.js; LocalFile does not send the file to a server. The page also shows ads from Google, whose scripts run in your browser; we do not pass file contents or file names to them.
